Calling all ocean enthusiasts! The Waikiki Community Center will host its 33rd annual benefit event, the Duke Kahanamoku Beach Challenge, on Sunday, April 15, 2018, from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Head down to Duke's Beach and Lagoon at the Hilton Hawaiian Village Waikiki Beach Resort to join both visitors and local community residents for an exhilarating day of outrigger canoe racing, stand up paddle board racing, and ancient Hawaiian makahiki land games including huki kaula, Hawaiian tug-of-war.
Each year the Duke Kahanamoku Beach Challenge honors individuals that have had a significant impact on Hawaii's water culture. The event will also feature keiki activities, a craft market and a all-star entertainment. Notable past performers have included Jake Shimabukuro, Henry Kapono, and Natalie Ai Kamauu.
"We're looking forward to another great turnout for the 31st annual Duke Challenge," said Jeff Apaka, Waikiki Community Center's Director of Community Relations. "It's an honor to have the opportunity to host this event to perpetuate the Hawaiian culture and to support and be supported by the community."
All funds raised from this year's event will allow the Waikiki Community Center (WCC) to continue to lend a helping hand to kupuna, keiki, visitors and people in need in the Waikiki community. WCC reaches many, providing tuition assistance for pre-K aged children from low-income working families, food for over 1,000 families in need, and activities that help over 3,000 seniors maintain a healthy and active lifestyle.\
For over 37 years, the Waikiki Community Center has served as a resource for the community of Waikiki, providing multigenerational services to better the lives of residents from keiki to kupuna. With support from the community, WCC has been able to effectively reach and help over 20,000 individuals receive the services they need. For more information, call (808) 923-1802 ext. 109 or visit www.waikikicommunitycenter.org.
Waikiki Community Center is a not-for-profit organization 501 (c)(3), operating for the benefit of people who live, work and visit Waikiki. The Center has operated for 35 years, since 1978, and is governed by a volunteer board of directors comprised of civic leaders in our community. Each year 21,000 people participate in 170,000 hours of programs and services directly provided by Center staff, volunteers and contractors. In addition, health, educational and social services are provided on campus by the Center's strategic partners that include the Waikiki Health Center, Coalition for a Drug Free Hawaii, UH Sea Grant College Program and United Self Help.
Other special events sponsored by the center will follow throughout the year, including a signature gala event honoring the Center and the Na Mea Makamae o Waikiki ~ Treasures of Waikiki in September.
